Taekwon-Do is a Korean martial art of unarmed combat designed by General Choi Hong Hi in 1955 for the purpose of self-defense. Since then, Taekwon-Do has become one of the most popular martial arts for self-defense, sport, and personal development.
As a method of self-defense, Taekwon-Do offers a vast array of hand and foot techniques in addition to joint manipulation and takedowns. Realistic self-defense strategies and techniques are taught at all belt levels.
Taekwon-Do also offers the opportunity to compete at the local, regional and national level in events such as patterns, free sparring and breaking. USTF National championships are held every two years for the opportunity to compete internationally in the ITF World Championships.
Many students choose Taekwon-do for the development of "life skills." Taekwon-do is well recognized for building confidence and self esteem, increasing the ability to concentrate and focus and the development of self control. Students also learn martial arts etiquette that encourages courtesy and respect for others.
Taekwon-Do is often recommended by teachers and doctors as a method of helping those people with short attention spans, low self-esteem, or academic under achievement. It is suitable for people of all ages, size, and physical ability. The structured curriculum helps students set goals and experience the joy and satisfaction of reaching them.
